The Smiths by Stephen Wright
Stephen Wright’s big break in photography came in 1985, when he was asked to do this shoot outside the Salford Lads’ Club. This image is the most iconic shot of The Smiths ever taken. It was voted by the NME as one of the greatest rock photographs and has also been accepted as part of the National Portrait Gallery.
The Rolling Stones by John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins
Hoppy captured a young Rolling Stones in 1964 at a morning photocall for Melody Maker. He feels that this is possibly the most revealing time of day to shoot a rock band and here, he captured a glimpse of their true character. In his words – “Mick – quietly observing, Charlie and Bill – genial & relaxed, Brian – typically, not the best of vibes, Keith – glad of mutual support. Moral – beware of snapping musicians before lunch!”
Ian Curtis by Philippe Carly
From the late 1970s through to the early 1980s, Brussels was host to a thriving live music scene. This was documented by avid concert-goer, Philippe Carly, who built up an incredible archive of over 50,000 photographs. This striking image is one of the most famous of the Joy Division frontman and was taken at a Brussels gig in 1979.
The Beatles by John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins
In 1964, The Beatles were on the brink of megastardom. This print shows them on their way to Teddington Studios, accompanied by their road manager Neil Aspinall. “Ringo seems to be in a dimension of his own at the still point of a turning world”, says Hoppy of the Beatles’ drummer who dominates this striking image.
