For Carly, photographing New Order in 1981, was like seeing a butterfly painfully emerging from a chrysalis. It was only one year since the death of Joy Division singer, Ian Curtis and he still cast a powerful shadow over the band. Twenty-five years later, Carly is struck by the similarity between this striking image of Bernard Sumner, taken at the Ancienne Belgique and his famous shots of Ian Curtis: “The stares are almost identical, though this photo is taken sideways and the other was full frontal, the intensity of the look is magnetic and cuts right across the photo.”
